We met in 2015 on the first day of our internship at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. We instantly clicked over Ashlen's sense of humour and Kendall's style. As the year progressed, we bonded over (wtf) we were doing from trauma patients to food service, coping with late night pizza and poutine, and eating good food and drinking wine while watching the Bachelor - a true friendship sparked. On a vacation in San Francisco while visiting Ashlen's sister, we brainstormed ways to stay connected after our internship, when we would be living in two different cities. We spent the flight home brainstorming our vision for this blog. Since then, we call each other daily, take planes, trains and automobile to spend time together and dream about the next city to explore.
Our goal for this blog is to help you incorporate nutritious ingredients into everyday recipes so that you fall in love with healthy food one bite at a time.
Ashlen & Kendall
Kendall became interested in dietetics her when father was diagnosed with hemochromatosis and it completely changed her family's eating habits. Growing up in a multicultural family (Jamaican, Chinese, and German), she spent her time cooking, exploring and trying new cuisines.
Kendall holds a Honours Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition from St. Francis Xavier University, a Professional Masters Diploma in Nutrition from St. Michael’s Hospital and Ryerson University, and a Diabetes Educator Certificate from the Michener Institute of the UHN. She has worked in long term care and chronic disease management helping patients with hypertension, kidney disease and diabetes improve their lifestyle through nutrition. . Currently she works at a preventive medicine clinic.
Besides working as a dietitian, she enjoys cooking with family and friends, spending time outdoors and doing spin and hot yoga.
Prior to becoming a registered dietitian, Ashlen knew that her career had to be focused around helping people. With this in mind, plus her love for cooking and living a balanced and healthy lifestyle, nutrition was a perfect fit.
She achieved her Honours Bachelor of Applied Science in Applied Human Nutrition from the University of Guelph. Following this, she then moved to Toronto to complete her dietetic internship and Professional Masters Diploma in Dietetics at St. Michael’s Hospital and Ryerson University. She recently completed a Diploma in Sport Nutrition through the International Olympic Committee. She has worked in sports nutrition helping athletes improve their performance and well being. Currently, she works in weight management and bariatric surgery.
Outside of the nutrition world, she loves to spend her time with family and friends, enjoying the beautiful outdoors and tasting new and delicious food. Ashlen can’t wait to work together and help you achieve your nutrition goals!
